KERN, McNICOL EARN SUPER COMP WINS AT FAMOSO By Bob Johnson Famoso Raceway Bakersfield, CA Aug 19-20, 2000 Glenn Kern and Chris McNicol earned victories at the Southern California Super Comp Association 'double-header' race at Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield. Kern won event six on the 10-race schedule by defeating Jared Leighton on Saturday night, and McNicol stopped Hans Scheibe in the Sunday afternoon final to win the seventh race of the season. Matt Hartzell of Modesto, Calif. was the top Perma Cool Challenge qualifier of the Saturday night race, logging an 8.901 on the 8.90 index. Mike Solina was second with an 8.901, Val Torres Jr and Hans Scheibe both ran 8.907 for the third and fourth positions, respectively. Jared Leighton opened the third round of racing with an 8.995, 138.48 (.420 r.t.) win over Mike Solina, losing with an 8.994, 157.89, while Jack Beckman used a .413 light and 8.91 to stop David Cerny Jr with a losing 8.910, and Kern advanced with an 8.96 as Hartzell shut-off with a 9.61. Kern and points contender Jack Beckman met in the semifinal, with Kern getting the better light--.434 to a .461-and the win light at 8.928, 155 to a losing 8.906, 160. Leighton ran an 8.898 on a bye run. The final was decided at the starting line, when Jared Leighton left way too early with a .365 red light, as Kern got the win with an 8.911, 155.92 (.445 r.t.). Leighton's runner-up time was 8.991, 157.28. Kern is sponsored by Valley Balancing (Ceres, Calif), Valvoline, Mickey Thompson Tires, and fiancee Debbie Stockton The Sunday afternoon Perma Cool Challenge qualifying saw Ken Serpan on the pole with a perfect 8.900, followed by Matt Hartzell's 8.901, Sam Boyd ran 8.901, and Val Torres Jr ran 8.902. Others running on the number were Chris Diyco (8.903); Dillon Easter (8.903); David Cerny (8.904); Jared Leighon (8.905); and Joe Ghyselinck (8.909). Chris McNicol opened eliminations with win over Val Torres, in round two he beat points leader John Boyd; Mike Solina red lighted in the third round to advance McNicol to the semi where he got a bye into the final. On the opposite side of the ladder, Hans Scheibe stopped Dillon Easter in round one; his better reaction time ended Kern's weekend in round two; in the third round he beat Mike Lane; and in the semi he used a .403 light and 8.95 to stop Beckman's "Blackbird" dragster at 8.943, 156 (.432 r.t.). McNicol won his second race of the SoCal Super Comp 2000 season when he ran an 8.927, 144.30 (.439 r.t.) as Scheibe lost with an 8.997, 156.35 (.431 r.t.). Tracy Quinlan and Dillon Easter were semifinalists. The Super Comp series continues on September 9-10 at L.A. County Raceway, with the series final scheduled for October 28, also at L.A. County Raceway.
