I have been a regular visitor of this site for years now, and it's simply the best information source for the Star Trek Gold Key Comics. In fact, it's the only one I know that I would recommend. And it keeps getting better and better. Keep up the good work!

I have been an avid collector and reader of these often maligned comics since I was five (a long time ago!) and I must say that this is an incredible web site! Several of the stories were imaginative and very much in the spirit of the original series. They helped keep Star Trek alive for many children. Artist Alden McWilliams was well known as a comic strip artist, and his fluid style was very similar to the cartoonists of the forties and fifties. I wish you and your site continuing success!!!

What a pleasant surprise finding this site! I remember owning some of the comics as a boy, especially the "Evictors" comic with the large white ship on the cover. I've always remebered that image, don't know why... I also remember trying to draw the cover from memory a few times when I was young, colors & all. This site was clearly well thought out, & makes an interesting read. Keep up the good work, & thanks for bringing back some memories of childhood.

Cheers!

Gold Key ST comics looks interesting, but I have no chance to read it. It needs republishing so everyone could buy and read it. Who's current copyright holder, don't know? Isn't there any chance that it is "public domain" by now?

Hey Curt, I finally got hold of Annuals 1969, 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1979. Without my consistent returnin' to your brilliant site [now into the hundreds of Macehits, no doubt], I'd not know who drew the stories in those Annuals or who produced the Annuals...well...maybe the second bit I'da found out, but usually I prefer a specific person - rather than a company - when I write who a book[etc.] is from.

Cheers Curt. Your continuing friend/visitor,

Christopher.

This is a WONDERFUL site. What a find! The only information I was unable to get is WHY the original artist was only involved in the first 2 comics, and why was the second artist changed after the 37th comic? Also, do you or anyone else know why Scotty has BLOND hair in the first number of comics? I find that quite interesting. Anyway, thanks for this terrific Star Trek site!

Always enjoyed the original comics, but, have never seen the first twelve issues. Cannot wait for my next free moment to return again. I must be careful to savor this!

    Again, Thanks,

Hey! What a great site! I remember reading these comics in the late 70's. They are so expensive today that I only pick up an issue every now and then. Where I live they were only available at retail stores like Ben Franklin, Ames, or Sky City. I remember having the first reprint book and I really liked that you had the covers pictured. After looking at your site I want to go play with my Mego Mr. Spock doll! LOL

Thanks for all the hard work you did on a great site!

I loved your site. I have the reprints but not many of the individual issues and was gratefull for the high quality images you have on your site. There's something about the style of those covers that reawakens that feeling of mystery Star Trek used to hold for me when I was a kid. Back then it was fresh and new and I couldn't get (or afford) enough of it and although I still love it now, it's become too familiar to offer the escape it used to.

I want to thank you for such a wonerful site. The site was very informative. I was given my first Gold Key at school by my teacher at the end of the school year in the 70's. The next year she gave me my first Enterprise log. Since that time I have collected all 61 issues, all 4 Enterprise logs, 3 of the British annuals, the 2 Dynabrite reprints, and 1 of the mini comics. I will now be on the look out for the other mini comic as I didn't know that there was one. Thank You

I have a Star Trek Planet of No Return and Star Trek - Missing in Action - On a Dark Planet - both in excellent condition. However, they were published for Australia and printed in the Philippines. ( are they Reprints perhaps?)
Anyway I wanted to know the value of these comics and was hoping you could help me regarding that.

Thanks.

A great site, I have most of the UK annuals, my first was 1972 at the age of seven. My first Gold Key Trek was issue 18, when I read these comics, its back to the magic trek years through a childs eyes. I'm now an artist and I still love these covers. This is the first time I've seen them all, so thank you for that, and don't give up this site. [A British comic TV21 was my first memory of comics, [5yr old] in 1970, this too featured Star Trek, as well as Spiderman, and the Silver Surfer. Check it out. Wayne

Great site. I'm surprised but gratified that you've taken the time to do such an extraordinary tribute to these under-rated comics.

The very first comic book I ever purchased was one of the Gold Key Star Treks, issue # 4. I was fascinated by the cover photo of the gorilla creature holding onto the shuttlecraft (a scene not actually seen in the episode Galileo 7). I managed to buy most of the TREK comics through the years.

I was fortunate to have written a story last year for TV Zone magazine (# 149) of my horrifying days of collecting Star Trek comic books as a kid. Artist Tom Holtkamp did some great artwork (integrated with live-action photos from my collection) of my days fighting to save my Star Trek comics from the merciless scissors of my cousin. Len Wein was also kind enough to share some memories of writing those early Gold Key adventures.

Gold Key always did a entertaining (if quirky) job with their TV titles- Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel, The Invaders, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and Twilight Zone. The covers were terrific, as well as those super rare color pics.

Again, a great job you've done here. I'll be back!

Star Trek #2: The 12 cent issue has a fishing gear ad on the back. The 15 cent issue has a rare photo back cover. I have now come across a 15 cent issue with a fishing gear ad on the back cover. The only variant listed in Overstreet and on the Census is the rare photo back cover issue. I now have all three versions and was wondering if the price variant fishing gear issue counts as a whole new listing? Thank you.

I got a little over 20 of the Gold Key ST comics and was amazed at how much they're worth considering these are something of a joke among ST fans. I read somewhere they were drawn by some Italian guy in Italy who had never seen the series and it's painfully obvious.

Great Site. I remember buying Gold Key Star Trek issue 1 from a local paper shop back in the 60's. I wish I still had it. I sold most of my comics when I got married in 1980 and have spent the last 15 years buying them back. That's life, eh??
I now own a complete set of the British Star Trek Annuals but would love to get my hands on the original Gold Key comics one day.

Thanks for anything you can do.

I also have GK issue #55, which says 'SPOCK vs. SLOTT: A World Against Itself!'. Is the typographical error intrinsic to all the #55 issues published, or just some? Hope to know soon, thanks!   Since there were only a few translated issues of the Star Trek Gold Key Comics ever published in Holland, I was surprised to learn there a lot more published in the States. The site has the quality I've come to expect from you in all but one respect: why not include the texts of the Pscucho Files piublished in some of the comic issues?   I have heard that some company will be re-issuing the Gold Key comic books. I wondered if anyone had any further info on this? Also, does anyone know how many trading cards (Skybox) were issued for Classic TREK in 1998? I have a total of 460 cards (all 3 seasons) - not counting duplicates.   Nice site! I really enjoyed reading about these Comics. The Star Trek universe is so cool it is a shame no more was made. Well, I can't really complain, there are currently five Star Trek series and several movies, but what I meant is... What a shame they didn't do more Star Trek with Captain Kirk than what they did! In the original series there were many loose ends. For example, what happened with the Female Romulan Commander from Enterprise Incident? They could have done a cool episode continuing that story later on, like in Season 4. Except there never was a Season 4 of TOS... Anyways, nice site, I saw a lot about Star Trek in here I didn't know about, and keep up the good work! :-)

I have issues 46 and 47 with the Whitman face versus the Gold Key logo, yet in your thumbnails I see they were also printed with the Gold Key logo. Which issues had both versions printed, or were these later reprints? Was one a mail order designation? Please explain the Whitman anomaly.

Hello, Great site! I have a question. First let me tell you that I collected the Marvel and DC Trek comics for many years and always assumed these, the "originals" were out of my price range. Imagine my surprise when I saw my first ones today in the 1 dollar bin of my local comic shop of all places. Given, the condition was rather ratty,so I picked up the best looking one I could find, just out of curiosity. Its issue #52 btw. Anyway my question, and the reason I found your great site is because the publisher logo says "Whitman" not "Gold Key". I understand both were part of Western Publishing, but all images I can find on the net show the "Gold Key" logo. Is this a reprint? An alternate version? A version for a different market? What? The date matches the dates you have listed for the "Gold Key", so I'm guessing its not a reprint. I checked Mile High Comics and they sell both logo types and specify if they are "Whitman." Incidentally, they sell this particular issue for more than its "Gold Key" countepart. Please, any light you could shed on this issue would me most helpful. Thanks, and sorry for the lengthy missive :0)

Yes, that original Star Trek comic book was almost like looking at a Bizaro version of Star Trek (especially in the ealry years).

As a kid, trying to rectify the differences between TV Trek and comic book Trek (at a time when I thought all things Trek, whether they be an action figure, comic book or the TV show were done by the same people)made for some real fun.

Now, the comics stand as prime examples of early Star Trek merchandising. It's always fun to see what happened when TV and movie licences weren't so tightly controlled and regulated.

They just sold the licence and then let the licencee pretty much go thier own merry way. Now, of course, the storylines of any Trek (and most other property) comic tie in have to be approved by the studio.

So, what happens is this interesting Bizarro Trek where in the early issues the crew used Military jargen like "Check", "Roger" and "Over". The Enterprise leaves rocket trails and the Enterprise looks a lot like a submirine on the inside.

Later on, as the show began to grow in popularity, more effort was given to making the comic art and stories more true to the actual show.

This site is a great reference for those looking to get these pieces of Trek history.

Now that there are trade paperback reprints of these comics coming, it's more essential then ever.

Enjoyed this site very much. I had most of the UK annuals from the 1970s as a kid and enjoyed them immensely, especially in the long years when the series was absent from the BBC. I was only vaguely aware that the strips in the annuals were reprints from American comics and having read those few books so many times it's been fascinating to read here about all the stories I never saw. I'm now eagerly awaiting the reprints from Checker books - almost as good as seeing long-hidden episodes of the original series-! Many thanks to Mark and Curt for all your work and dedication.
